74. Movie Review : Baasha - A Rajnikanth Blockbuster

I needed to have a review of a Rajnikanth's film on my blog, it was a necessity.

I chose Baasha because it going to released again soon, a digitally remastered version of it. Baasha was the film which gave Rajni's stardom new heights. He became sort of a Demi god after this film. It was a phenomenal blockbuster and no one had seen such euphoria before. Frankly, since i am not a south Indian person so i don't find any special in Rajni's acting. I don't even find his film good or excellent. They are entertaining but then that's that. But what impact's one thinking is the craze of people towards Rajni.

Baasha was developed in Rajni's mind when he was working with Amitabh Bachchan's film 'Hum'. He took a part of the film's undeveloped storyline and developed it according to his own culture and thinking. I watched Baasha two years back on Youtube. I wanted to watch it earlier but I couldn't find any copy of it with subtitles.

The story is simple. A taxi driver is minding his own business. A beautiful girl having rich father falls in love with him. He tries to run away from her but she insists and love blossoms. Taxi driver has a mother, a sister and brother who is a cop. It is a perfect family. Cop brother is honest so rowdies beat him. Taxi Driver hero don't do anything but when they hurt his sister, he beat their asses up. It gets revealed that The taxi driver was a former mafia don of Mumbai. His past is revealed. We come to present. He beats everyone. solves all problems. Marries the girl and films ends.

You may be thinking that, what a crap simple story. Yes, it is not a very exciting story but trust me, when you will watch the film, all the hairs of your body will raise itself in anticipation to watch the film. The film is very captivating, except for the Rajni's past story. There is a Baasha song which is very catchy and irrespective of the fact whether you are familiar with the Tamil language or not, you will start humming it. I find Nagma very beautiful and every time i watch her movie from that time, it leaves no doubt in my mind that they had temples for her.

In some parts of the film you will also hear Terminator-2 theme music in the background. No surprises and shame there because it has been used in many Indian movies too. The graphics are bad, camera work normal, everything in the film is average except Rajnikanth, Film's dialogue and the pace. The film is a research in film making because if you have a good script with great dialogues and terrific actor who has his own great style then every other mistake of the film does not matter. Imagine people watching this film again and again. It is the Rajni effect. People love the film because of Rajni and if you remove him from the film, there is nothing left in the movie to watch.

Soon we can see the film on the big screen, an opportunity which people like me could have never got being born late and being born in North India. I am posting the link for the trailer of the new digitally remastered version here. Do check it out -
