54. Idea of Goal Setting

If you have to go to Delhi from Mumbai, you reach ticket counter at Mumbai airport and ask for a ticket –what would you say.. I want to go to somewhere please give me a ticket. Do you think she would be able to give you ticket? No she won’t. You have to specify her where you want to go and only then you can be given tickets to go there. You have to tell her that. Think of her as God, God here is someone who fulfills your wish. Now if  you reach god and tell them you need a lot of money. What do you think God will send you. Nothing. He don’t know what your definition of lot of money is. He needs to know a number. Tell him you need 5000 rupees and now it will be easier for him to send you that money.

So the most important thing about Goal setting is that it has to specific. You need to know where you are going before you start walking. You can run faster than anyone in this world but if you don’t know where you are going, the whole running will be useless. Goal setting is important because it gives you a direction to move towards, it gives you a deadline, it narrows down your efforts in one direction and increases focus. It is very important to visualize your goal and know where you are going. Saying I want to be a good man isn’t enough because adjective only enhances noun, it has no value on its own. The definition of good varies from people to people. No one can define how good is there in a good man. But when you say "I want to be like Mother Teresa", you know exactly what you want to be. You can visualize mothers Teresa and now you know where you are going. Goals has to be set in a ways in which you can visualize so that you can see them. You cannot fall in love with a girl you haven’t seen, can you? Goals has to be specific so that you know exactly what you will be working for and goals should always have deadline so that you can plan backwards and decided how and which way you can achieve it.
